From 'Hero' to zero, via Sooraj and Athiya

Yahoo Review: Hero
Cast: Sooraj Pancholi, Athiya Shetty, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Aditya Pancholi
 Direction: Nikhil Advani
 Rating: *
What is wrong with Nikhil Advani? His debut film was the very watchable ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’ (unless it was ghost directed by Karan Johar). And now, Advani remakes a 1983 Ghai film and flavours it KJo-style and the resultant mishmash is just incomprehensible.
A criminal falling in love with a cop’s daughter, re-evaluating his life and turning over a new leaf – all the for the sake of love – this trope worked in the ‘80s. But such romantic notions are considered delusionary these days. Fortunately, or unfortunately, this generation has a more practical approach towards love and romance and therefore, this wanting to run away with a goon needs to look credible. You can’t just pick up a premise that worked three decades ago, rehash it and hope that it will work.
The director seems to have a plausible criminal case going on but everyone forgets about it for about two years when Sooraj (Sooraj Pancholi) is away in jail and Radha (Athiya Shetty) is safely tucked away in Paris. We just lose that thread and much later in the narrative, the link is picked up like an afterthought. The build-up to the climax is such a letdown and every cliché in the book is incorporated into this tale to will a happy ending.
It’s a shame that Tigmanshu Dhulia seems to approach his part sincerely but fails to rise above the shoddy storytelling.
As far as the debut of the two star kids goes – Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty – they are a colossal disappointment.
Sooraj has taken the route that most star kids do – he has beefed up, picked up a few dance steps and has found a mentor in Salman Khan - I guess he thinks his work is done. Maybe, when he gets time off from his gym routine and has time to introspect, he will re-evaluate his acting skills. In fact, if he can work on his dialogue delivery and is in the hands of a better director, he might get better.
But Athiya Shetty offers no such hope. She has half an expression to convey all her emotions – love, passion, anger, and frustration. Every now and then she stretches out her long limbs to dance but is not in the least graceful. What is extremely discomfiting is her perennial duck face.
Watch ‘Hero’ if you are a huge Salman Khan fan and want to catch his rendition of the title track with the end credits.
